04/22/2021 KWAL radio tower dismantled
KWAL AM 620, Silver Dollar Radio, first went on the air in May, 1938. Originally, it was a 250 watt Class IV signal, located at 1450 on the AM dial, but in 1947 it was granted the move down the dial to 620, where it remained. It was located in Osburn, Idaho, in the Silver Valley, and was the go to for local information for 80 years, signing off for the final time at 11:59 pm on August 31, 2018. Over the years it played everything from rock and roll to country, to talk radio, and play by play accountings of local high school sports was a community fixture. When the Sunshine Mine Disaster occurred on May 2, 1972, KWAL was an integral part of providing information to the community during this horrible time. KWAL was known for many things, including the fact that its array was located on two different sides of an interstate, as it in fact predated Interstate 90 by many years.
Unfortunately, one of its two towers was damaged in 2016, and was not able to be replaced, which contributed to its eventual shut down in 2018. Today the remaining tower was taken down, marking the beginning of the area's transition to its next stage. KWAL now will only exist in our memories.
